Back in the glittering haze of mid-80s Europe, Dutch funk-synth outfit Fox the Fox carved out a space in the disco-pop scene with the scintillating "Precious Little Diamond"—a pulsing, falsetto-laced anthem that dropped in Oct. 1984 as the second single off their debut In the Dark of the Nite. It became a kitschy European hit, reaching #5 in Germany, #11 in the Netherlands, and #18 on the U.S. Billboard Dance chart.

The band, formed in Groningen in 1981 by Berth Tamaëla and Sylvia Musmin (aka Silhouette), blended funk-infused Euro-disco with Sylvia’s evocative lyrics—penned at her kitchen table. The track’s big break reportedly came when George Michael overheard it in the UK, prompting CBS execs to push it into the mainstream.

Polished by producer Willem Ennes and echoing the falsetto energy of early Euro-pop icons, the track became a defining mid-80s groove. Even Dieter Bohlen of Modern Talking cited it as a key influence.

Though Fox the Fox never repeated the success, “Precious Little Diamond” left a lasting legacy. In 2013, The Weeknd sampled it in Wanderlust. For its 40th anniversary, remixes by Shep Pettibone, Ben Liebrand, and Psychemagik landed on red vinyl for Record Store Day 2024.

Four decades on, it remains a sleek time capsule of synth-funk euphoria—a shimmering ode to love and 80s groove that still hits just right.
