We bring you the fifth episode of our Selectors series featuring Prom Night, the alias of Shaquille Beck McGosh, straight from the heart of Denmark’s underground scene, where energy meets innovation on the dance floor. With a DJ career that began at the age of 14, Prom Night is becoming a beacon of Copenhagen’s house and disco revival, spinning sets that traverse sleazy disco, Italo house, afro-house, and acid with effortless finesse.
Born in Aarhus to South African parents, Shaquille grew up immersed in a world of soulful rhythms and eclectic grooves. His parents’ expansive record collection—spanning funk, jazz, RnB, and disco—sparked a lifelong passion that shines through in his DJ sets and productions. Today, as the founder of Prom Night Records, he blends the retro allure of '70s and '80s disco with the pulse of contemporary house, creating music that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
Prom Night’s productions, like his Italo-disco-inspired debut track ‘Heat 84’ and his latest release, the melancholic ‘Planet Romantica’, showcase his ability to fuse radiant synths, rolling basslines and gleaming arpeggios into tracks capable of lighting up clubs across Scandinavia and beyond. From headlining festivals like Roskilde and Distortion to hosting his own disco and house nights at Copenhagen’s Culturebox, his growing influence on Denmark’s club scene is undeniable. His mixes, featured on platforms like HÖR Berlin and Rinse FM, offer a kaleidoscopic journey through dance floor weapons, from dreamy balearica to chugging basslines.
As he joins us to kick off the new year and chat about his musical universe, Prom Night delivers a mix that embodies his style: groovy, sparkly, and irresistibly rhythmic. A celebration of music that uplifts, unites, and invites you to dive into the waters of a promising artist.
Let’s start at the very end of your year, 2024. In December, you released your single track ‘Planet Romantica.’ Can you walk us through your creative process for this production?
I had been listening to loads of old Italo cuts in that period - and at the time I was highly influenced by the themes and melodies of those tracks - ‘Planet Romantica” is essentially my reinterpretation of a classic Italo anthem—think borderline cheesy hooks, high-pitched, almost ‘screaming’ synths, and rolling basslines - my favourite italo-disco-recipe!
How did you start working as a DJ, and what were your main influences?
I come from a family where music, dancing, and the arts were always at the forefront. In that environment, pursuing music felt like a natural path for me. My dad bought me my first mixer and record player when I was just 10, which sparked my interest, but it wasn’t until I was 14 that I really started mixing for real when I got my first set of equipment.
My early influences were rooted in the music I grew up with—hip hop, R&B, soul, jazz, disco, and the vibrant black music culture that surrounded me. Those genres shaped my love for rhythm, melody, and storytelling through music.
Coming from Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, I was fortunate to start gigging at a young age, around 14 or 15. With the support of local promoters and established DJs - eternally grateful for those early, vivid experiences.
Prom Night, as a DJ name, evokes a strong 80s aesthetic. How did you come up with it, and how do you see this identity evolving with your sound and career?
‘Prom Night’ definitely carries that strong 80s aesthetic, and that was intentional. I’ve always been drawn to the energy and nostalgia of that era—the vibrant colors, the fun, and the romance. It felt like the perfect fit for my musical persona because the name evokes a sense of celebration and the kind of carefree, energetic vibe that I love bringing to my sets.
The name ‘Prom Night’ also ties into my love for dance music across different eras, particularly the 80s, with its blend of pop, disco, and synth-driven sounds. As my career evolves, I see ‘Prom Night’ as a bridge between those nostalgic, iconic sounds and the more contemporary influences I bring into my work. It’s an identity that’s fluid, and I want it to feel timeless—something that reflects both the past and the future. As I continue to explore new sounds, I think ‘Prom Night’ will grow to embody the full spectrum of influences, from classic disco to modern house, while always keeping that celebratory, fun energy at its core.
Our ears noticed with excitement two bangers among your productions: ‘Back 2 Daydreaming’ and ‘Rhythm of the Sun.’ What stories do they tell?
Both ‘Back 2 Daydreaming’ and ‘Rhythm of the Sun’ really capture my deep love for early 90’s Italian Dreamhouse. 'Back 2 Daydreaming' is that paradiso-esque Balearic groove that instantly transports you to sun-soaked afternoons—it’s dreamy and uplifting whilst 'Rhythm of the Sun' encapsulates that same vibe, but with a more rave and club-focused energy. It’s a bit more driving and intense, reflecting my personality as both a producer and DJ.
For me, it’s all about balancing rhythm with melody. Whether the track is fast or slow, I always aim to create grooves that make people move, blending melodic elements with a solid rhythmic foundation. These tracks are a perfect reflection of my style—layered, energetic, and always about the journey.
What’s the most unexpected or memorable thing you’ve experienced while performing, and how did it impact your approach to live sets?
Thankful for the many memories I’ve made over the last 15 years of DJing, but one standout moment was definitely playing at Milkshake Festival last year. The crowd was beyond electric—there’s nothing like feeding off that kind of energy. My favorite part of performing is playing before a crowd that’s ready to go on a journey, moving through groovy disco cuts, mid-range bangers, rave anthems, and club weapons.
That experience taught me the power of building a set that evolves with the crowd. It reaffirmed how important it is to read the room and adapt, while also maintaining a flow that keeps the energy building. It’s all about creating a shared experience where the crowd and the music are in sync, and that’s something I aim to carry into every live set.
You told us you had fun working on the mix. What’s cooking in it, and how did you approach the process of building it?
From afrodisco to italo, to house and back to some US disco cuts—I really aimed to showcase many of my revibed favorites in this mix. I absolutely LOVE a mix that crosses genres, tempos, and moods, as it creates a dynamic listening experience that keeps people engaged. When putting this together, I focused on weaving a narrative that flows naturally while still surprising the listener with unexpected twists. I wanted the mix to feel like a journey, and I hope listeners enjoy that sense of exploration and energy as much as I enjoyed crafting it!
