Reaching your ears from a melting pot of global sounds—here’s a selection of fine music for those primarily seeking world melodies, curated by Boyd V.

Boyd V is an Amsterdam-based producer and DJ with a deep love for playful rhythms and genre-blending sounds. His sets weave together funk, boogie, and (deep)house, always driven by a strong percussive groove. This rhythmic focus extends to his own productions, including his upcoming Vibrations EP, set for self-release soon.

1) Luciano Alves – Maracatu Atomico (1989)

"This 1989 Brazilian record is a synth-driven cover of Maracatu Atomico by Gilberto Gil. From the moment the synths kick in, it grabs my attention. It’s undeniably 80s—packed with synth-heavy sounds that match surprisingly well with the Latin-inspired rhythms… It is groovy Latin jazz-funk that captures the sound one would expect in a Brazilian record from that time, while still sounding progressive and unique."

2) Beto Leal – Menina Do Carnaval (1987)

"This track is on a beautiful compilation with various interesting artists from the Bahia region in Brazil, which came out in 1987. I like how it feels a bit ahead of it's time, and how the electric guitar adds somewhat of a raw edge to the track. Especially compared to other music that came out around the same time."

3) Francois – Of Love (1982)

"This beautiful disco record from 1982 is truly captivating. The arrangement of the instruments is silky smooth, and so groovy. I particularly like how the vocalists' quite high voice fits on top of that instrumental."

4) Fumme – Only You (Instrumental) (1983)

"I love ’80s boogie, and this record from 1983 is a prime example of why it’s so good. Drum comuter rhythms, groovy basslines, and funky guitar riffs—a recipe that always brings the groove to the dancefloor."

5) Jamie Loring – Love or Infatuation (E-Smoove's Groovy Mix) (1992)

"The early ’90s seem to hold most of my favourite house tracks, and this 1992 E-Smoove mix of Jamie Loring’s track is definitely one of them. Sweet and sexy vocals combined with classic house elements that generate the captivating sound from the early 90’s. Some might consider it a softer track, but if this dropped at peak hour, I’d lose my mind. Even though it’s quite a cheapo, this one never leaves the bag!"

6) Nick Ingman – Laser Lights (1984)

"This 1984 funk track by composer and arranger Nick Ingman is intense—and I love it. It feels like the soundtrack to an extreme TV game show, yet at the same time, it’s an extremely groovy, high-tempo funk."
