Let’s dive straight in.
We’re not Spotify, nor are we Bandcamp or Beatport – at least, not today. We’re a small startup driven by the passion to draw the attention of music enthusiasts and the broader music community to the challenges the industry has faced during its transition from an analogue past to a digital future. Chiefly, we’re here to spotlight music that risks being lost forever in this shift.
Like any startup fueled by the enthusiasm of its team and the goodwill of an angel investor, we operate with limited resources. The tasks are many, and the hands and minds to tackle them are few. This, unfortunately, means we can’t always deliver on your requests to improve Revibed as quickly as we’d like. Please bear with us! I promise we’ll get there.
Today, though, I’d like to address two frequently asked questions, both of which concern the quality and format of the files you receive from us.
Yes, the files do sound different, and there’s no escaping it. These tracks were produced across different countries and continents, often using a mishmash of equipment – or, in some cases, barely any equipment at all. The Revibed catalogue reflects this eclectic soundscape, capturing the heartbeat of forgotten dance floors and overlooked collectible vinyl.
Unlike major digital marketplaces, every record in our catalogue has been digitised directly from vinyl, often in varying states of preservation. When a less-than-pristine record meets the lo-fi production values of a bedroom studio, the sound inevitably bears those marks.
This also explains why we’ve chosen to master everything at a level optimised for your DJ sets, with the expectation that your gain knobs sit at 12 o’clock – a “unity gain” standard. This approach ensures you always have the headroom needed to blend Revibed files seamlessly into your set, without compromising on dynamics or clarity.
So, what do you think? I’ve said enough for now, but I’d love to hear your thoughts – especially since I know this topic is relevant for many of you.
